On 3 September 1982, the Nederlandse Commissie voor stralingsdosimetrie (NCS, Netherlands Commission on Radiation Dosimetry) was established, aiming to promote appropriate use of dosimetry of ionising radiation, both for scientific and clinical purposes. Over the last thirty-five years, the NCS has published almost 30 reports, from radiation safety to the clinical application of radiation. These comprehensive NCS reports have been highly acknowledged in the field of radiation dosimetry, not only in the Netherlands and Belgium, but also in the UK, USA and further abroad.
The NCS platform has established firm links with the government, discussing topics varying from the proper use of shielding aprons, radiation safety officers or the balance between risk and benefit concerning radiation exposure to subjects participating in medical research.
None of this would have been possible without the enthusiastic input of dedicated experts from different disciplines including radiation physics, nuclear medicine, radiology, radiobiology and radiotherapy. The stimulating debates regarding pros and cons of certain QA procedures or superfluous regulations imposed by industry or the government were transferred to practical and relevant recommendations for those involved in the medical use of ionising radiation.

The lustrum meeting will be held on the subject of “Proton therapy”, as three institutes in the Netherlands and two in Belgium are embarking upon this challenging new treatment technique for cancer patients. Issues that will be highlighted include proton physics, clinical application, radiation protection and radiation dosimetry.
